At The Socioscope, we are committed to protecting your privacy and ensuring the security of your personal information. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you visit our website or use our services.

The Institut d'Études Avancées de Paris (IEA), which is the data controller for the personal data described here. We handle your data in line with the EU GDPR and the French Data Protection Act.

Information we collect

Contact and newsletter data: name, email, institutional affiliation, and details you give us when you subscribe, contact us, or register for events.
Research data: information you provide when taking part in our research, collected under a separate research consent form.
Initiative-page editing data: if you suggest edits to your initiative page, your account details and email, a record of the changes you submit, and any content you send us, including images.
Technical data: IP address, browser type, device information, and cookies for website functionality and analytics.

How we use your data, and our legal basis

Sending newsletters, event invitations, and updates — your consent, withdrawable anytime.
Responding to your inquiries — our legitimate interest in helping you.
Conducting and publishing research — scientific research / legitimate interest, with research consent where required; for any sensitive data, the research condition under the GDPR.
Running and securing the website — our legitimate interest in a safe, working site.
Publishing and updating initiative pages (including suggested edits) — our legitimate interest in an accurate research record.
Meeting legal obligations.

You can object to processing based on legitimate interest, and withdraw any consent, at any time (see Your rights below).

If you suggest edits to your initiative's page

If you suggest changes, we process your account details and email, a record of the changes you submit, and any content you send us, including images — to run the platform and publish your initiative. Our team reviews suggestions before publishing; we do not use automated or language-model tools to make these editing decisions. A person reviews them.

We do not sell, trade, or rent your personal data. We share it only: with research partners under data-protection agreements; with service providers who help us run the site, as our processors under contract (all currently in the EU/EEA); where required by law; or with your consent.

Connect requests

If you use the Connect button to reach another initiative, we process your message and your contact details in order to review it and forward it on your behalf. We do this to run the platform and protect privacy.

International transfers

We currently keep your data within the EU/EEA. If we ever need to transfer it outside, we will use appropriate safeguards (such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or a transfer to a country with an adequacy decision) and update this policy.

How long we keep your data

Research data: 15 years, renewable, as approved by our research ethics committee, then deleted or anonymised.
Newsletter data: until you unsubscribe.
Initiative-page and account data: as long as the page is active, can be taken off on demand.
Inquiry/contact data: as long as needed to handle your request, plus a short period.

Data security

We use appropriate technical and organisational measures, including encryption in transit and at rest, access controls, regular security reviews, and staff training.

Cookies

We use only strictly necessary cookies required for the website to work and stay secure. We do not use analytics, advertising, or tracking cookies, and we do not need a consent banner because we set no non-essential cookies. If this ever changes, we will ask for your consent first.

Your rights

Under the GDPR and the French Data Protection Act, you can:

access your data;
correct it;
erase it ("right to be forgotten"), subject to legal and research obligations;
restrict processing;
object to processing based on our legitimate interests, including direct marketing;
withdraw consent at any time, as easily as you gave it;
receive your data in a portable format.
