Lufa Farms

Lufa Farms is a Montreal-based, for-profit food company founded in 2009 that builds and operates rooftop greenhouses to grow vegetables within the city. The company was started by four co-founders, one of whom remains as CEO, after he observed the lack of food-chain transparency in Canada compared to his experience in Lebanon. The first commercial rooftop greenhouse was constructed in 2010–2011, and the company now operates five greenhouses across Montreal, including what it describes as the world's largest commercial rooftop greenhouse at approximately 163,000 square feet. The greenhouses use hydroponic systems — growing plants in substrates such as coconut husk or peat moss with water-soluble nutrient solutions — and no synthetic pesticides. Crops include tomatoes, aubergines, fresh herbs, and leafy greens. LED grow lights extend the photoperiod during winter months, and the operation benefits from Quebec's hydroelectric power grid for renewable energy.

Lufa Farms sells exclusively direct to consumers through an online marketplace, with no physical retail presence. Customers create an account, select a delivery day, and customise a basket up to midnight the night before delivery. Orders are transmitted automatically to the company's own greenhouses and to partner producers — including bakers, butchers, cheesemakers, fruit growers, and fish producers — who prepare products overnight for packing and same-day delivery from a central distribution centre. Because products are sold before they are harvested or produced, the model reduces overproduction and food waste while maximising freshness.

Beyond its own greenhouse production, Lufa Farms operates as an online marketplace for a wide network of local and regional food producers. A dedicated purchasing team vets potential partners against criteria covering agricultural practices, ethics, certifications, and quality, and maintains ongoing relationships to accommodate crop failures or seasonal variation. Partner producers gain access to a consumer base of approximately 40,000 weekly customers without managing their own logistics, marketing, or distribution. Lufa Farms also sources non-local products such as bananas, avocados, and citrus directly from specific farms or fair-trade suppliers rather than through intermediary distributors, and lists these alongside locally grown produce.

The company coordinates crop rotations in its own greenhouses to complement the field seasons of partner farms, avoiding competition with seasonal field produce. Its internal IT team built and maintains the marketplace platform. The corporate team is small, while the distribution centre and greenhouses employ larger numbers of part-time workers. Lufa Farms states that its goal is a food system where rooftop-grown and locally sourced food rivals imported produce on price and is accessible to all consumers regardless of budget.
