The Long Table

The Long Table is a community project run by Tom Herbert, who has a background in baking and believes strongly in the importance of community dining. Located in Brimscomb Mill, The Long Table operates on a "pay-what-you-can" model, allowing people from different socioeconomic backgrounds to share meals without stigma. The initiative emphasizes dignity, equality and community, fostering an environment where everyone can eat together, regardless of economic status. The Long Table has been able to provide more than 40,000 meals in one year, supported by a network of local farms and sustainable food practices. It operates on a commitment to pay all employees a full wage and has developed partnerships with local organizations, including the Church of England, which has provided funding and support. The project also incorporates various community services, such as a bicycle repair shop and furniture bank, creating a holistic approach to community involvement.
